Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has secured his first Formula 1 world title at 20, finishing third in Mexico City as Max Verstappen claimed victory ahead of Lewis Hamilton.
Italian racing driver Kimi Antonelli has become the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history after securing the 2026 Drivers’ Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on 1 November. The 20-year-old Mercedes driver finished third in a dramatic race won by Max Verstappen, with Lewis Hamilton taking second place for Ferrari.
Antonelli claimed his maiden championship with four races remaining, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s record as the youngest driver to win the title. At 20 years and 68 days old, he also became the first Italian Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
The achievement marks a significant milestone in Antonelli’s rapidly developing career and establishes him among the sport’s most accomplished young drivers.
A Championship Secured Under Pressure
Antonelli entered the 71-lap race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez needing only a ninth-place finish to secure the championship, regardless of the results achieved by his closest rivals.
Starting fourth on the grid, he maintained a competitive position throughout an eventful afternoon. The race was interrupted by a red flag following a heavy accident involving Valtteri Bottas, while a later collision involving Arvid Lindblad brought out the Safety Car.
Despite these disruptions, Antonelli remained composed and completed the race in third place, comfortably exceeding the result required to confirm his title.
His performance reflected the consistency that has defined his second Formula 1 season. By the time he secured the championship, the Mercedes driver had recorded nine race victories during 2026.
Verstappen Wins Dramatic Mexico City Race
While Antonelli celebrated the championship, Verstappen delivered a closely contested victory for Red Bull.
The Dutch driver resisted sustained pressure from seven-time world champion Hamilton, eventually crossing the finish line just 0.799 seconds ahead of the Ferrari driver.
Antonelli followed in third, 4.006 seconds behind Verstappen, while Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris completed the top five.
Verstappen’s victory was his third of the season and demonstrated his ability to manage a demanding race despite interruptions and intense competition.
Mercedes Celebrates Historic Achievement
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised Antonelli’s composure and development following his championship-winning performance.
The young Italian’s rise has been closely watched since he entered Formula 1, with expectations surrounding his ability to compete at the highest level.
Winning the title in only his second season places Antonelli in a select group of drivers who have achieved the championship so early in their Formula 1 careers.
His success also represents an important moment for Italian motorsport, ending a 73-year wait for another Italian Drivers’ World Champion.
A New Generation Takes Centre Stage
Antonelli’s championship highlights the emergence of a new generation of drivers capable of challenging established Formula 1 champions.
His achievement combines exceptional early-career performance with the ability to deliver consistently under championship pressure.
With four races still remaining in the 2026 season, attention will now turn to how Antonelli concludes his title-winning campaign and builds on his historic success.
For Mercedes and Italian motorsport, the Mexico City Grand Prix will be remembered as the race that confirmed the arrival of Formula 1’s youngest world champion.
