N. Chandrasekaran, Executive Chairman of Tata Sons News Updates

N. Chandrasekaran Gets Fresh Five-Year Term at Tata Sons

India

N. Chandrasekaran is set to continue as Executive Chairman of Tata Sons for another five years, extending a leadership tenure that has seen the group expand into aviation, electronics, semiconductors and other future-facing businesses.

For nearly a decade, Natarajan Chandrasekaran has been at the centre of one of the most significant transformations in Tata Group’s recent history. Now, he is set to remain at the helm for another five years.

The board of Tata Sons has approved Chandrasekaran’s reappointment as Executive Chairman for a fresh five-year term, extending his leadership beyond the completion of his current tenure in February 2027. The resolution was approved by a majority of the board on September 17 and remains subject to applicable regulatory and statutory requirements.

The decision provides leadership continuity at a consequential time for the 158-year-old Tata Group, whose businesses range from technology and automobiles to steel, aviation, consumer goods and hospitality.

From TCS to the Top of Tata

Chandrasekaran’s journey within Tata stretches back four decades.

He joined Tata Consultancy Services in 1987 and rose through the organisation to become CEO and Managing Director. In 2017, he moved into the chairmanship of Tata Sons, becoming the first person outside the Tata family to hold the position professionally.

Since then, Tata’s business portfolio has moved into several new areas.

Under his leadership, the group has expanded its ambitions across electronics manufacturing, semiconductors, batteries, digital businesses and aviation, while continuing to develop established businesses including TCS, Tata Motors and Tata Steel.

One measure of that period is the changing scale of Tata’s listed companies. Reuters reports that their combined market value has increased from around $76 billion when Chandrasekaran became chairman in 2017 to approximately $277 billion.

A Decision That Restores Leadership Continuity

The fresh term follows several months of uncertainty around Tata Sons’ leadership.

Chandrasekaran had said in August that he would not seek another term after discussions over his reappointment remained unresolved. Tata Sons’ Nomination and Remuneration Committee subsequently asked him to reconsider, citing his contribution and the wider interests of the group. He agreed to do so, leading to the latest board decision.

There remains disagreement within Tata’s governance structure over the reappointment. Tata Trusts, the controlling shareholder of Tata Sons, has challenged the validity of the board decision, making the regulatory and governance process surrounding the new term an issue that remains to be resolved.

For the wider group, however, Chandrasekaran’s continuation provides greater clarity over who will lead its strategy through the coming years.

The Next Five Years

His third term could prove very different from his first.

Tata is simultaneously pursuing major investments in emerging industries while developing businesses it has brought back into the group, most notably Air India. Tata Sons is also navigating regulatory requirements concerning a potential public listing, adding another significant strategic consideration for its leadership.

That leaves Chandrasekaran with a broad mandate: strengthen established businesses while turning some of Tata’s biggest new investments into the next generation of growth engines.

His reappointment therefore represents more than another five years for a longstanding chairman.

For a group spanning more than 100 countries and businesses at very different stages of transformation, it provides something equally valuable: continuity at the top while Tata builds for what comes next.
