Opendoor CEO Kaz Nejatian Takes on President Role

Opendoor Technologies has appointed CEO Kaz Nejatian as president following Lucas Matheson's departure from the position. The leadership transition places both executive responsibilities under Nejatian as the company continues its technology-led transformation.

Opendoor Technologies has appointed Chief Executive Officer Kaz Nejatian as president, expanding his leadership responsibilities following the departure of Lucas Matheson from the position.

The appointment took effect on October 21, 2026, according to a regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Nejatian, 44, will continue serving as CEO and a member of Opendoor’s board of directors while assuming the additional responsibilities of president.

The decision represents a change in the company’s executive structure as it continues efforts to transform its technology-driven residential real estate business.

Lucas Matheson Steps Down as President

Lucas Matheson stepped down from the president position on October 21, 2026.

Under the terms of a transition agreement, he will remain employed by Opendoor in a non-executive capacity as an adviser to the CEO through July 15, 2027.

During this period, Matheson will continue receiving substantially similar compensation and employment benefits.

The agreement also outlines severance provisions applicable under specified circumstances when his advisory employment concludes.

Matheson had joined Opendoor as president in December 2025, bringing experience from the financial technology and e-commerce sectors.

Before joining the company, he served as CEO of Coinbase Canada and held several leadership positions at Shopify.

His responsibilities at Opendoor included corporate development, financial planning and analysis, and emerging strategic initiatives.

Nejatian Expands His Executive Responsibilities

Nejatian became CEO of Opendoor in September 2025, succeeding the company’s previous leadership team during a period of strategic transition.

His appointment was part of a broader effort to reposition Opendoor as an AI-powered real estate platform.

Before joining Opendoor, Nejatian served as Chief Operating Officer and Vice President of Product at Shopify.

At Shopify, he was involved in scaling product development and operational teams, supporting the company’s growth as a global commerce technology platform.

Earlier in his career, Nejatian held product leadership roles at Meta and founded Kash, a financial technology company acquired in 2017.

His experience across technology, operations and entrepreneurship has informed his approach to leadership at Opendoor.

A Focus on Technology-Led Real Estate

Founded in 2014, Opendoor operates a digital platform designed to simplify the process of buying and selling residential properties in the United States.

The company uses technology and data-driven systems to support property transactions and provide homeowners with alternatives to conventional real estate processes.

Under Nejatian’s leadership, Opendoor has emphasised the role of artificial intelligence in improving its products and operations.

His appointment as president consolidates two senior executive positions as the company continues implementing its business strategy.

However, the regulatory announcement does not identify a new product launch or operational restructuring directly resulting from the appointment.

Leadership Consolidation During Business Transformation

Opendoor has experienced several senior leadership changes since Nejatian became CEO.

In September 2025, company co-founders Keith Rabois and Eric Wu returned to its board of directors, with Rabois appointed chairman.

The company subsequently appointed Matheson as president and confirmed Christy Schwartz as Chief Financial Officer.

These changes formed part of Opendoor’s efforts to establish a leadership team focused on execution, financial discipline and technology development.

With Nejatian now holding both CEO and president responsibilities, the company has consolidated executive authority under an established leader.

What the Appointment Means for Opendoor

The latest transition places Nejatian at the centre of Opendoor’s strategic and operational leadership.

The company has not announced any change to his compensation as a result of the additional appointment.

For Opendoor, the leadership change comes as it continues pursuing its ambition to use technology to improve residential property transactions.

The effectiveness of the new executive structure will ultimately depend on how the company translates its strategic priorities into operational and financial performance.
