How the UK’s Grantley Hall Met its Sustainability Targets Early While Saving £500K

Hotels within the UK’s luxury hotel sector are responding to the pressures of climate change by implementing green technologies and operations. Grantley Hall, a luxury five-star hotel and wellness retreat, exemplifies how the sector can decarbonise without sacrificing profit or its luxury standards and aesthetic.

A Partnership Focused on Sustainability

Located on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, Grantley Hall approached Advantage Utilities in 2019 with three goals: to improve sustainability, save on energy costs and ensure compliance with UK regulations. Known for its exceptional service, stunning location and exclusive offering, Grantley Hall successfully met its 2024 sustainability target ahead of schedule by implementing solutions that achieved £500,008 in energy procurement savings. In percentage terms, this delivered a saving of 33.18% of Grantley Hall’s total energy spend.

Low-Cost, Long-Term Energy via Solar PV

As a low-cost and green alternative to grid-source energy, solar photovoltaic (PV) onsite generation is an excellent way to boost sustainability. A 32 kW solar array was installed on the hotel’s roof as a key element of Grantley Hall’s sustainability efforts. Carried out in collaboration with renewable energy specialists Engenera, the solar array is estimated to generate 34,000 kWh of energy annually, contributing to the hotel’s long-term sustainability goals whilst ensuring the distinctive and visually impressive site is not impacted by energy infrastructure. Over the 25-year lifespan of the system, it is estimated to deliver carbon savings of 9,431kg CO₂ annually.

Tackling Logistical Challenges with Precision

Sustainability in the luxury sector often presents unique challenges, particularly for its potential impact on the aesthetics and operations of a site. For Grantley Hall, a comprehensive action plan was implemented to address three key issues: aesthetic concerns, installation logistics and minimising disruption.

  1. Aesthetic concerns: Grantley Hall was able to greatly minimise the visibility of the solar panels by placing the panels in a non-visible area on the central roof.
  2. Installation logistics: In effectively managing the project’s logistics, cranes and forklifts were used to precisely position the panels in the central part of the hotel, ensuring a seamless installation took place.
  3. Minimising disruption: To ensure that the installation process did not disrupt the guest experience, the installation was scheduled during quieter periods.

Despite these logistical hurdles, the project was completed successfully and greatly minimised the impact on the guest experience – a compelling example of how sustainability can be achieved in the luxury hospitality sector.

Real-time Energy Monitoring for Continued Savings

Data-driven energy management also plays an important role in delivering energy savings. Grantley Hall’s energy management platform enables proactive tracking and optimisation of its energy usage by ensuring that its energy-saving initiatives are performing at peak capacity. The ability to monitor energy in real time will play a critical role in achieving future energy savings, fostering a data-driven, proactive approach that helps Grantley Hall to maintain control over energy consumption and further reduce energy waste.

Ensuring Compliance and Sustainable Efficiency

Compliance with regulatory standards was a key focus of Grantley Hall’s sustainability drive. Advantage Utilities guided the luxury hotel through the complexities of Phase 3 of the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) and Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR), ensuring that they remain compliant with all necessary regulations across its site. The ESOS audit, mandatory for many businesses, identifies tailored and cost-effective measures for businesses to save energy and achieve carbon and cost savings, with the audit costs often significantly outweighed by the savings from implementing the recommendations. SECR brings carbon and energy reporting to more businesses, encouraging the implementation of energy efficiency measures.

Site audits were a key way for Grantley Hall to identify how to become more energy efficient. Conducted in 2021, this led to improvements in equipment efficiency and prompted positive behavioural changes among the staff that continue to support sustainability goals today. These changes not only enhanced energy efficiency but also helped develop a more environmentally aware culture within the hotel’s operations. In this case, the compliance journey has not only fulfilled regulatory obligations but has also contributed to Grantley Hall’s long-term sustainability vision.

By partnering with Advantage Utilities, Grantley Hall achieved significant financial and environmental benefits whilst maintaining the highest standards of service that its guests expect.
