N. Chandrasekaran will step down as Tata Sons Chairman when his current term ends in February 2027, closing a decade-long chapter at the helm of India's largest conglomerate.
One of India’s most consequential corporate leadership tenures is approaching its close. N. Chandrasekaran will step down as Chairman of Tata Sons when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, bringing nearly a decade at the helm of the Tata Group’s holding company to an end.
Chandrasekaran, who joined the Tata Sons board in October 2016 and became Chairman in 2017, has decided not to seek another term. His departure will open a new leadership chapter for a conglomerate whose businesses span technology, automobiles, steel, consumer products, aviation and hospitality.
A Decade of Transformation
Chandrasekaran’s tenure has coincided with a significant reshaping of the Tata portfolio. The Group expanded its presence in digital businesses, electronics and semiconductors, while Tata regained control of Air India in 2022 and embarked on a major transformation of the carrier.
His leadership has also placed emerging technologies firmly on the Group’s agenda. Earlier this year, Chandrasekaran described AI as the next major infrastructure shift, comparing its potential impact with electricity and the internet.
The transition ahead will now place attention on succession at the top of one of India’s most influential business groups. With several large-scale investments underway across aviation, advanced manufacturing and technology, the next Chairman will inherit a portfolio positioned firmly around long-term transformation.
Chandrasekaran’s remaining months in office provide Tata Sons with a transition period before a new leader takes charge in 2027, marking the beginning of another chapter for the more than 150-year-old Group.
