Five years after his controversial Zoom layoff made global headlines, Better.com founder Vishal Garg has lost the CEO role, opening another unexpected chapter in his leadership journey.
Few leadership stories come with an arc quite like Vishal Garg’s.
Five years after the Better.com founder became globally known for dismissing around 900 employees during a Zoom call, Garg has now lost the chief executive role at the company he helped build.
Better Home & Finance announced on August 3, 2026, that board member Daniel Lewis had been appointed interim CEO with immediate effect. The company initially characterised Garg’s departure as a mutually agreed transition and said he would remain on the board during the handover.
What initially appeared to be an orderly succession has since developed into a more complicated corporate leadership story.
Subsequent reporting indicates that Better’s board terminated Garg as CEO, while Garg has challenged the circumstances surrounding his removal and sought shareholder support in an effort to regain the position. The disagreement has since moved into legal proceedings.
From a 79-Second Call to a Leadership Crisis
Garg’s name became inseparable from Better.com’s workplace culture in December 2021, when he gathered roughly 900 employees on Zoom and informed them that they were being laid off.
“If you’re on this call, you are part of the unlucky group that is being laid off,” he told employees during the call.
The episode lasted only a few minutes but travelled rapidly across the internet, triggering an international conversation about leadership, empathy and how executives communicate difficult business decisions.
Garg subsequently apologised for his handling of the layoffs, acknowledging that he had failed to show appropriate respect and appreciation for affected employees. He temporarily stepped away from his duties before returning as CEO in January 2022.
Now, the executive who once delivered one of corporate America’s most widely discussed termination calls finds himself on the other side of a leadership decision.
Better.com Enters a New Chapter
Taking over on an interim basis is Daniel Lewis, a Better board member with more than 30 years of operating, investment and governance experience. He has served as Managing Partner of Orange Capital Ventures since 2015.
For Better.com, the appointment creates an opportunity to move forward under new executive leadership.
For Garg, however, the transition carries an unusual symmetry. His departure is not significant simply because a founder has lost the CEO position—leadership changes happen every day. It stands out because of the history that preceded it.
Five years ago, Garg became a case study in how leaders handle the departure of employees. In 2026, his own departure has placed his leadership journey back under the spotlight.
