Brad Lightcap is leaving OpenAI after eight years to launch a new venture, opening a fresh entrepreneurial chapter for an executive closely involved in the AI company's rapid expansion.
After eight years helping OpenAI grow from an emerging research organisation into one of the world’s most prominent AI companies, Brad Lightcap is leaving to build something new.
Lightcap announced his departure on August 11, saying he plans to launch a new venture after reflecting on the challenges and opportunities emerging as artificial intelligence continues to advance. Details about the venture, including its focus, have not yet been disclosed.
From OpenAI’s Early Years to Global Expansion
Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, having previously worked with CEO Sam Altman at Y Combinator. He went on to become one of the company’s senior leaders, playing an important role as OpenAI expanded its business, infrastructure and global partnerships.
In March 2025, OpenAI expanded his responsibilities as Chief Operating Officer, placing him in charge of business and day-to-day operations, including global deployment, business strategy, infrastructure, key partnerships and operational excellence.
His role changed again in April 2026, when he moved away from day-to-day management to focus on special projects. His eventual departure is therefore expected to represent a more gradual leadership transition rather than an abrupt operational change.
Lightcap has not yet revealed what he plans to build next. His move nevertheless marks a notable entrepreneurial turn for an executive whose career has been closely connected to OpenAI’s evolution and the commercial expansion of generative AI.
As the technology enters its next phase, Lightcap now moves from helping scale one of its defining companies to pursuing a venture of his own.
